Decision making is a major aspect of social work and as Thompson (2009, p.236) argues, 'The challenge of decision making...is that of looking at options, evaluating which we feel is the most appropriate way forward and then watching carefully to see whether we have made a wise move.'

This quick guide presents one framework for decision making, which can act as a starting point for you as you begin to face professional choices on placement.

Reflective Questions

  1. Think of a decision you have had to make recently. How did you approach making that decision? Did you feel you made the correct decision? If you had to make the decision again, would you change anything?
  2. How practically, can you involve service users in your decision making processes?
  3. How can you use supervision sessions to help you make decisions? You may wish to discuss this with your practice educator at your next supervision session.
  4. To what extent can good decision making minimise risk?
