How can you get the most out of group supervision?

Learning Objectives

After considering this resource, you should understand what you can do both beforehand and during a session, in order to get the most out of group supervision.

On some placements, you may be offered the chance to join group supervision sessions. This can involve a group of different students coming together to share experiences from their placement, and in turn, facilitate learning. Like one-to-one supervision though, you need to actively participate in the process to get the most out of the learning opportunity.

In the following video, practice educators who run group supervision sessions discuss how they feel students can get the most out of this type of supervision.

Reflective Questions

  1. Have you had any experience of group supervision? What did you do to get the most out of the session?
  2. What advantages are there of sharing experiences with fellow students? Are there any disadvantages?
  3. How do you think group dynamics could impact your ability to actively contribute to sessions?
  4. How can you ensure your own individual learning needs are met in a group setting?
