Student guidance for use of simulations

Please record your reflections and learning in the separate reflection document provided within each scenario.

These simulations have been designed to complement Social Work taught courses, across the BA (or BSW), MA (or MaSW), BA apprenticeship and fast track provisions such as Frontline and Step Up. We hope you enjoy using them and value the learning afforded by their use. The simulations can be used in two main ways – small group work or individual work.

Focus
  1. You will be required to bring an internet-connected device to class, such as a tablet or laptop
  2. Your tutor will remain with you, or be available to answer questions that might come up
  3. In the context of social work and application of the law, it is recommended that you try to problem solve as much as possible, but your tutors will be there for advice and guidance
  4. Once the activity is over, it is essential that you discuss your reflections and learning with your social work tutor or practice/field educator. This will be essential on points of law, risk assessment and the management of ethical dilemmas raised in the activity
  5. You should provide your reflection sheet to your tutor or practice educator for feedback to contextualise your learning. Your tutor can affirm where you have acted in an appropriate manner and identify where you can improve your interpretation of the material, and application of appropriate law and theory from the activity
Focus

Guidance follows a similar path:

  1. Your tutor or practice educator will set out the expected time to be spent on the material and arrange for your submission of the reflection document and follow-up tutorials
  2. Follow-up with your tutor (or practice/field educator) is essential to contextualise your learning, affirm where you have acted in an appropriate manner and to identify where you can improve your interpretation of the material and application of appropriate law and theory
  3. You should provide your reflection sheet to your tutor or practice educator for feedback to contextualise your learning
