How to interpret the way people communicate
Learning Objectives
After considering this resource, you should be aware that behaviour may need interpreting in order to understand the actual meaning.
Communication is something that can often be left open to interpretation. For example: if someone says 'I'm fine' when asked if they are ok, but does not make eye contact or smile when giving their response, can you trust what they are saying to be how they are genuinely feeling?
In the following case study, written by Andrew Ellery, Elliot talks about his time working with teenagers in a community project and the challenges of interpreting how they communicated with him, in order to establish an effective working relationship.

Reflective Questions
- Considering your own experiences, what factors could impede successful communication and engagement with individuals or groups of young people?
- When facing some of the dilemmas Elliot described, do you think 'reflecting in action' or 'reflecting on action' is the most important approach to take?
- What theoretical concepts could explain the emotional aspect of this case? Can you think of a time you have faced something similar?
