Attachment theory across the lifecourse

Learning Objectives

After considering this resource, you should understand how attachment theory can be useful for understanding adult as well as children's behaviour.

Although originating in the context of children's early development, with particular regard to the bond formed between a baby and its primary carer, attachment theory also offers important insights into adult behaviour.

Attachment styles formed in early childhood play out in relationships throughout life, whether those relationships are characterised by romance, care giving, care receiving or loss.

In this video, David Howe talks about how the dynamics of dependence change across the lifespan and how insights into social and relationship histories can bring a useful perspective on client's present relationship behaviours.
