At some point on placement or in your career, you may work with service users who do not speak English as their first language. This can require you to work with interpreters to effectively communicate.

The following quick guide provides a useful framework for interviewing a service user using an interpreter.

  1. How would you prepare for the nonverbal communication which a service user from an alternative cultural context to your own may exhibit in a meeting? How will you note this nonverbal communication in the meeting?
  2. What do you think the potential pitfalls are of using a family member as an interpreter?
  3. Consider some of the jargon you use frequently on your placement, or at university. Are you able to explain these more simply so someone not familiar with the terms would understand?
  4. How can you ensure you are working in an anti-oppressive way when working with interpreters and service users who cannot communicate in English?
