It goes without saying that placements are an integral element of your degree course. Although your university will usually be responsible for organising your placements, you should be prepared to take advantage of any opportunities you are given to help with the process of identifying a suitable placement.

One way to start thinking about different placements is to consider what sort of learning you need from the placement. The following activity is designed to help you reflect on this, and to get you thinking about the importance of learning in and from practice.

Reflective Questions

  1. What is the process for organising placements at your university? What are your own responsibilities in this process?
  2. Before doing this exercise, what sort of placement did you think you wanted? Do the outcomes of this exercise correlate with that placement idea? Or are they pointing you in a new direction?
  3. How can your university tutor help you decide what sort of placement you might need? Talk to them about their role next time you meet them.
  4. Consider what skills and experience you already have and could bring to a placement. How do these fit with the skills you have identified as needing to learn on placement?
